Finally the print is peeled off the press. A powerful press is essential because the paper has to be forced into the grooves on the plate so that the ink is picked up. Printing paper is then placed on the plate before both are run through a press. In the industrial process this is done by means of a scraper while printmakers clean off the ink with a piece of tarlatan or scrim. All the surfaces in relief (the raised areas) are then cleaned of all traces of ink. Ink is applied to the plate and rubbed into the grooves. The principles of intaglio printing are the same whether applied to industrial printing or printmaking. ![]()
